Those who have peace in themselves can bring peace to others. This peace which the world cannot give results from seeing all within the providential plan of God, who never for a moment forgets his children. – Rev. Francis Fernández-Carvajal (In Conversation with God)
Humanity is desperately in need of heroic cross bearers and ambassadors of peace in a wounded world under siege of unrelenting evil.
As Christians, we understand that God does not restrict our free will. The recent atrocity of Uvalde – no less murderous than Buffalo, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora and Newtown, and no less evil than 9/11, Rwanda, and Auschwitz – is incomprehensible.
God has not caused such wickedness to befall His children.
The spiritual forces behind the madness and senseless suffering today are the same powers and principalities of darkness that have perpetrated every assault on humanity – familial and societal, foreign and domestic – since the fall of man.
What It’s Really About
The Father of Lies, a murderer from the beginning, is conducting a sociopolitical masterpiece – a perfect symphonic storm – of opposition and division, corruption and collapse, irrationality and violence, within the family and between nations around the world. But it’s about so much more than the sum of any present-day crisis or conflict.
It’s really about generations of humanity, who in ignorance or by choice, have not recognized and loved God in whose image all men, women, and children are created. Consider that the root cause of all this evil is in our free will not being united to God’s Divine Will.
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Matthew 22:37-39)
Consider that we are reaping what we have sown by refusing to be a voice for the voiceless and uphold the value and dignity of all human beings. Consider that this chaos has risen from the blood-soaked depths of a global culture that has failed to love, protect, and defend the most vulnerable among us from conception to natural death. When we consider that…
The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion…We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, killings, of wars, or of hatred…If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other? – St. Teresa of Calcutta
Cross Bearers and Ambassadors of Peace
What can we do from the pew?
Simon of Cyrene was seized and forced to help carry the Cross of Christ on the Via Dolorosa (Luke 23:26). Unlike Simon, we are never forced to pick up our own cross, let alone the cross of another.
The Eighth Station of the Cross teaches us that God often fulfills His will in our lives in intimate relationship with others whether we are lifting one up or being lifted.
To willingly help shoulder the cross of our wounded brothers and sisters is to recognize and love Jesus united with them on their way of suffering.
Similarly, we must humble ourselves and recognize Jesus in those He sends to help us and anoint our wounds.
Our Sure Refuge
In moments of unbearable solitude, when the light and breath of your spirit seems suffocated by the darkness of the tomb, there is a sure refuge in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, our Mother, who knows well the soul-piercing agony of the Cross.
She is both the Mother of Sorrows and the Mother of Consolation. One day at a time, Mary will lovingly and patiently lead you by the hand far beyond the despair of Good Friday and the sadness of the grave to the Hope of the Resurrection and the Joy of Eternal Life in Christ Jesus.
While I Was Writing
While writing this feature, in the span of three days, more than 50 people have been injured and 11 killed in 7 mass shootings reported in the U.S. from South Carolina, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Phoenix, West Texas, Georgia, and Arizona.
In Ondo state, southwest Nigeria, armed men entered St. Francis Catholic church in the town of Owo and fired at the congregation during the Pentecost celebration. News agencies have reported that at least 50 worshipers have died in the attack.
Humanity is desperately in need of heroic cross bearers and ambassadors of peace who, nourished and strengthened by the Bread of Life, are living vessels of faith, hope, and charity bearing witness that all are within the providential plan of God who never for a moment forgets His children.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…
